Men’s Golf Tied For Ninth After Day 1 of SEC Championships
ST. SIMON’S ISLAND, Ga. – Junior Kentucky golfer Tyler Wilson (Lexington, Ky.) fired an even-par 70 Friday as the Wildcats are in a tie for ninth place after the opening day of the Southeastern Conference Championships. As a team, the Wildcats, the defending SEC Champions, fired a 12-over-par 292 on the first day of the three-day event at the Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course.
No. 1 Georgia leads the tournament field after carding a 4-under-par 276. The Bulldogs are led by three golfers in the top six of the individual field. No. 32 Alabama is four strokes behind UGA, shooting an even-par 280, while No. 3 Florida is third with a 285.
A pair of Georgia golfers headline the individual standings as Brian Harman fired a 3-under par 67 on the opening 18 holes to lead all golfers. Teammate Chris Kirk is one stroke back and tied with Vanderbilt’s Luke List, Florida’s Brett Stegmaier and Alabama’s Matthew Swan for second place.
Wilson currently is in a tie for ninth place to lead the Wildcats and is three strokes off the tournament’s leader. His first-round 70 tied for his second-lowest round of the season. The local product tallied a season-low 69 in the first round of UK’s last tournament - the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate April 7-8.
Senior Matt Kohn (Longwood, Fla.) is tied for 19th place after a 2-over-par 72, while freshman Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wisc.) is tied for 31st place with a 73.
First-year golfer Andy Winings (Brownsburg, Ind.) carded a 77 and currently is in a tie for 51st place, while sophomore Brad Doster (Winter Park, Fla.) is tied for 59th place with a 79 to round out the tournament field for the Wildcats.
