Men's Golf uses Strong Second Round to Climb into Fourth

MONTEREY, Calif. – It was a tale of two rounds for the University of Kentucky men’s golf team on Monday in the opening day of the Saint Mary’s Invitational. The Wildcats started slow early, shooting a 17-over-par first round and found themselves in 10th place. UK came roaring out of the gates in the second round, firing a tournament best on the day of 6-under-par 282. The Cats climbed six spots to fourth position and are within striking distance, just 10 strokes off the pace heading into the final round on Tuesday.
Sophomore David Snyder started out his afternoon, shooting a 2-over-par 74 in the first round of 18. The Somerset, Ky., native fired back in the second round with a 2-under-par 70, which included three birdies and an eagle on the par four sixth hole. Snyder finished with the lowest score for the Wildcats on Monday and is tied for ninth overall after an even-par 36 holes.
Stephen Powers struggled early, carding an 8-over-par first round. However, the junior responded in the second 18, tying the tournament low on the day with a 6-under-par 66 in the afternoon session. Powers sank eight birdies in the second round and is tied for 15th individually at 2-over-par for the invitational.
Will Bishop sits tied for 29th after a 6-over-par day. The sophomore shot a 4-over-par 76 in the opening round before concluding the afternoon with a 2-over-par 74.
Junior Cody Martin stepped up big for the Cats in round two, firing an even par 72. Martin recorded three birdies in the second round, including an eagle on the par five hole No. 12. Martin is tied for 38th overall at 7-over.
