Gameday: The Blue/White Game
Saturday, 1:30 at Commonwealth Stadium
April 25, 2009
The foundation will be set after Saturday.
The 2009-10 regular season is still four months away, but the UK football team will wrap up the first phase of the football season Saturday as it concludes spring football practice with the annual Blue/White Game. The Wildcats have been practicing for four weeks and will conclude Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium with the final scrimmage of the season.
"It's been a good spring," UK Coach Rich Brooks said. "It can always be better, but overall we've made some good progress and we've identified some people who are playing at a different level than they were when the season ended last year, and that's always an important thing."
As was the case last spring, the Blue/White Game will be played with two separate teams. The coaching staff conducted a draft Thursday to split the squad into two equal teams, which proved to be a success last year when the White team scored the winning touchdown with 1:06 to play for a 23-22 victory.
Regardless of how the teams are split for the annual spring game, Brooks said he always looks for the same thing: improvement and getting his team ready for the fall season when things really count.
"I always look for the same things - individual improvement, technique and ability, as well as guys making plays," Brooks said. "We've had a lot of good fundamental work this spring and now it's time to go out and see who's going to make plays and take advantage of the opportunities."
Surplus Apparel/Equipment Sale at Blue/White Game: There will be a sale of surplus athletic apparel (various sports, items and sizes) on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. on the west concourse of Commonwealth Stadium.
There will also be a sale of used athletic equipment (various weight machines, weight-training items and football practice gear) on Saturday as well. This sale will be by sealed bids only from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Nutter Field House, which will be open on the Alumni Drive side of the building. Football practice items will be sold in "lots" (quantities only). The items may be viewed Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with sealed bids due by 3 p.m. Instructions on how to bid will be available at the site.
