LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky junior outfielder Cameron Flynn has been picked in the 23rd round of the MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins, going with the 707th overall selection, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Flynn’s draft pick has entered the UK program into historical significance, as the Wildcats have now had a total of seven MLB Draft picks in 2012, equaling the program record set in 2008. Flynn joins the seven UK draft picks, including outfielder Brian Adams (eighth round; Padres), catcher Luke Maile (eighth round; Rays), left-hander Taylor Rogers (11th round; Twins), third baseman Thomas McCarthy (18th round; White Sox), right-hander Tim Peterson (20th round; Mets) and southpaw Alex Phillips (21st round; Tigers).

A native of Lexington, Ky., and a product of Henry Clay High School, Flynn had a dynamic season for UK as a left-handed hitting power threat. Flynn hit .268 (52-for-194) in 59 games and 52 starts, with nine doubles, nine homers and 36 RBI, stealing two bases. Playing rightfield primarily, Flynn totaled three outfield assists, fielding .992 with just one error.

Flynn had several big swings in 2012, including a game-winning grand slam in a series-clinching win over No. 10 Ole Miss. The 6-foot, 195-pounder, added a monster home run off the light pole in rightfield in a win at No. 18 Georgia and a mammoth homer into the heavy wind in rightfield to five UK a lead at No. 9 Arkansas.

Flynn opened his collegiate career for two seasons at Morehead State in the Ohio Valley Conference, before suffering a wrist injury that required a redshirt season in 2011. Flynn hit 16 homers in his two years at Morehead State, batting .299 (69-for-231) with 59 RBI and six steals. He also pitched in nine games in relief, striking out nine and walking 12 in 7.1 innings at Morehead.
