Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader
LEXINGTON – The Kentucky baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader over North Dakota State to extend its winning streak to four on Saturday at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The Wildcats and Bison wrap up their four-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Kentucky 8, North Dakota State 0: Ryan Strieby went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Kentucky past North Dakota State, 8-0, in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Strieby got started in the first with an RBI double down the left field line to plate Collin Cowgill. He struck again in the third with another double, scoring Michael Bertram this time to make it 2-0. He later scored on Brian Hastings double and Kentucky pushed two more across for a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats made it 8-0 in the seventh with three unearned runs. Strieby singled to lead off the inning and came home when Mike Brown doubled. Brown scored when Brian Hastings reached on an error and Hastings crossed the plate on another error in the inning.
Greg Dombrowski started on the mound for Kentucky and earned the win after hurling seven scoreless innings. He allowed six hits and struck out five while walking none to improve to 4-0 this year. Dombrowski has not walked a batter in his last 44.2 innings dating back to last year.
Matt Robinson completed the shutout, UK’s second of the year, with two scoreless innings.
Kentucky 9, North Dakota State 5: Kentucky rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tally a 9-5 win over North Dakota State in the night cap.
Michael Bertram and Matt McKinney led the way for UK with three hits a piece. The two combined for six of the Wildcats’ nine in the game.
After giving up three unearned runs in the fifth, Kentucky answered with three of their own in the home half of the inning. Bertram had an RBI double that plated Steve Deaton, who doubled off the wall to lead off the inning. A passed ball and a fielding error allowed two more runs to tie it, 3-3.
Ryan Wilkes walked to start the sixth and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give UK its first lead, 4-3. The Bison tied it in the seventh off with an unearned run of Brock Baber.
McKinney came through with a two-out RBI double in the seventh that scored Bertram as the Wildcats took the lead for good at 5-4.
Four Bison errors, three singles, a walk and a hit by pitch led to four Kentucky runs in the eighth as the Wildcats pulled away. North Dakota State added a run in the ninth for the final margin.
Brock Baber picked up the win after pitching two innings and giving up the one run on two hits. Craig Snipp started and struck out nine in his six innings of work. He allowed three unearned runs on eight hits. In total, UK pitchers fanned 10 and walked none in the game.
Mitch McNary took the loss. He worked two innings and allowed two runs on one hit. He walked two and struck out two.
