Wildcat Runners Finish First in Season Opener

VERSAILLES - The University of Kentucky men's cross country team started the season with a victory in the Woodland Cross Country Trials while the women's squad garnered a tie. The Wildcat thinclads competed against the Louisville Cardinals and the Eastern Kentucky Colonels.
The Wildcat men won with a team score of 26 points compared to EKU's 30 and U of L's 80. UK was led by junior Hunter Spencer (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) who placed first overall with a time of 16:00.00 in the 5,000 meter run. Sophomore James Doaty (Louisville, Ky./Male) finished third with a time of 16:10.30 while juniors Thomas Morgan (Lexington, Ky./Catholic) and Kevin Panke (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) finished sixth and seventh respectively.
In the women's two mile run, the Wildcats tied for first with the Colonels with 37 team points apiece. The Cardinals finished third with 51 points. Sophomore Caity Phillips (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) led all runners by posting a time of 11:36.30. Sophomore Karen Wartgow (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) placed seventh while freshmen Allison Grace (Marble Cliff, Ohio/Grandview Heights) and Valerie Gefert (Concord Twp., Ohio/Mentor) finished eighth and ninth.
"I was pleased with the way they looked running," said UK Coach Don Weber. "Everyone looked poised out there and we came away from the race without any major aches or pains."
The cross country team will next run Sept. 15 in Bowling Green, Ky. at the Old Timer's Invitational.
