UK Freshman Breaks School Indoor Shot Put Record

In just his first meet as a Wildcat, University of Kentucky freshman Jeff Chakouian hurled the shot 65-10.50, the top heave by a junior-aged (19 years old or younger) athlete in the world this year, at the Wildcat Speed Meet on Friday, Dec. 8, at the Nutter Field House.

The throw, the first of Chakouian's collegiate career, surpassed Rutger Smith of the Netherlands by nearly one foot for the world's farthest toss by a junior in 2000. Most importantly, the distance automatically qualified him for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 9-10, 2001, in Fayetteville, Ark., surpassing the required mark by more than 3.5 feet. He also broke the school record of 64-09.50 set by Jesse Stuart in 1971.

"This is an achievement beyond spectacular," field events coach John Kenneson said. "This now puts him at No. 6 all-time in the world on the junior list. Since he has been at Kentucky, he has prepared for the Junior World Championships in Chile, and he threw a great distance of 61-11.75 to finish fifth. It is just phenomenal that he was able to throw this distance tonight."

The Cats added seven more first place finishes on the night. Sophomore Simidele Adeagbo won both the long jump (19-03.50) and the triple jump (40-03.50). The women's triple jump was a good one for UK as three more Cats finished just behind Adeagbo to claim the top four spots.

On the men's side, UK again finished in first-fourth places in the one-mile run. Freshman Justin Amason led the way, followed by sophomore Kevin O'Connor and fellow freshmen David Freeman and James Doaty.

Other first-place finishes were captured by freshman Paul Ciurlys (800-meter run), sophomore Thomas Morgan (two-mile run), freshman Caity Phillips (one-mile run) and the women's 4x400-meter relay team.

The Cats take an extended break and return to action on Jan. 12-13, when UK plays host to the Rod McCravy Memorial indoor meet.
