Kavanagh finishes fourth in hammer throw at Georgia Tech Invite.
ATLANTA (May 20, 2000) -- Senior Matt Kavanagh finished fourth in the hammer throw Saturday at the Georgia Tech/Reebok Invitational track and field meet.
Kavanagh's throw of 212-09.00 was his third toss of the season over 210 feet and well above the minimum NCAA provisional qualifying mark. It also improves on his third-place throw of 207-10.00 at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships last week.
Freshman Janet Crawford took seventh place in the high jump with a season-best outdoor leap of 5-08.50, which improves on her previous high of 5-07.00. With her final jump of her first outdoor season at UK, Crawford has progressed to within two inches of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
In the women's triple jump, junior Shevan Threats' leap of 41-02.25 gave her an 11th-place finish. A season-best for Threats, her jump was only two inches short of giving her a second NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She earned one in the long jump with her leap of 20-05.75 at the SEC Championships.
Attempting to improve his NCAA qualifying time in the 800-meter run, senior Jeff Limpert tied for ninth place with a time of 1:48.99. Though not an improvement, it was the fourth time this season he has crossed the finish line under 1:49.00. Freshman Chad Johnson was close behind in 14th with a time of 1:49.9h, his third time under 1:50.00 this season. Freshmen Hunter Spencer and Thomas Morgan also ran well, as Spencer was 0.01 seconds off his season-best time and Morgan shaved nearly one second off his season best.
Though the outdoor season has concluded for a majority of the Cats, Kavanagh and Limpert will have one final opportunity to compete. Their top marks/times this season have earned them spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, May 31-June3, 2000, in Durham, N.C., on the campus of Duke University.
