LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky track and field senior distance runner Luis Orta and freshman middle distance runner Keffri Neal were each honored by the Southeastern Conference on Tuesday.
Orta was named First Team All-SEC in the 3,000-meter and 5,000m runs, while Neal was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team for his performance in the men’s 800m run.
Orta, the 2012 SEC Men’s Runner of the Year, was the first SEC student-athlete to win both the 3K and 5K in the same championships since Georgia’s Ian Burrell in 2007. In addition, Orta was the first Wildcat ever to win the 3K and the first to win the 5K since Richard Ede won the race in 1987. On the men’s side, Orta was the only competitor in the SEC to win two events during the championships. Orta has now concluded his indoor career at UK, but is just a junior in outdoor track and field and will have one more year competing in cross country.
Neal earned the second most points, individually, for Kentucky during the SEC Championships behind Orta. The Surrey, BC Canada, native finished sixth in the men’s 800m run with a time of 1:51.82.
The All-SEC teams for indoor track and field were based on results from the 2012 indoor league championships which took place Feb. 24-26 at the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky. The winner in each event, including relays, earned first-team All-SEC recognition; the second-place finisher in each event, including relays, earned second-team All-SEC recognition, and the top freshman finisher in each event, excluding relays, earned SEC All-Freshman Team recognition.
