LEXINGTON, Ky. – In their final meet prior to the Southeastern Conference Championships, the University of Kentucky men’s and women’s track and field teams will head to two different meets this weekend looking to refine their times, marks and techniques.

The Kentucky distance runners will be in Seattle for the Husky Classic, and the remainder of the squad will move north to Geneva, Ohio for the SPIRE Collegiate Invitational. Both meets are being held Friday and Saturday.

The Husky Classic will house some of the top athletes in the country and features one of the fastest tracks in the country in Dempsey Indoor. Sophomores Chelsea Oswald and Taylor Wendler will get things started for the Wildcats Friday, as they race in the women’s 5,000-meter. Sophomore Stacey Eden and junior Luis Orta, who ran a career-best 8:08.09 in the 3,000m last weekend, will compete in the men’s 5,000m at 10:30 p.m. ET on Friday. Kentucky will have entrants in the men’s and women’s mile, 800m and 3,000m on Saturday.

Schools from across the country are descending upon Seattle this weekend. In addition to Kentucky, Arizona, Arizona State, California, Clemson, Colorado, Florida, Georgetown, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Stanford, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCLA, Utah, Virginia, Washington State and Wisconsin, among others, will be competing in the Dempsey Indoor.

Sophomore Kayla Parker and freshman Daniel Buckles will compete Friday in the women’s pentathlon and men’s heptathlon, respectively, Friday at the SPIRE Collegiate Invitational. Held at the SPIRE Institute, Kentucky will begin Saturday’s competition at 10 a.m. ET with the men’s shot put, women’s pole vault, men’s and women’s long jump and men’s weight throw. The Wildcats will finish with the men’s and women’s mile at 3:20 p.m. and 3:35 p.m., respectively.

The field at the SPIRE Collegiate Invitational is loaded with talent, featuring 17 teams spanning the U.S., eight of which are ranked in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association top-25 poll. In addition to Kentucky, other teams in the field include Auburn, East Carolina, Florida State, George Mason, Georgetown, Guelph, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State (women’s team), Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Texas (men’s team), Virginia Tech, Western Kentucky and Wichita State.

The Husky Classic and SPIRE Collegiate Invitational are the final two meets of the indoor season for Kentucky before it hosts the SEC Indoor Championships on Feb. 24-26 at the Nutter Field House.
