LEXINGTON, Ky. - University of Kentucky freshman Terence Boyd tied the seventh best mark in program history in the long jump Friday, leaping 7.28m/23-10.75. The Ft. Worth, Texas native finished third in the event on day one of the Rod McCravy Memorial meet held at the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky.
Boyd fouled on his first jump and recorded a mark of 5.34m on his second jump. After fouling on his third jump, Boyd soared up the rankings by jumping 23-10.75, tying the seventh best indoor long jump mark in school history.
Kentucky also got a strong second-place showing from junior Shelby Kennard in the women's pole vault, and a career-best mark in the women's long jump from sophomore Kayla Parker.
Kennard finished in a tie for second in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.87m/12-08.25. The height ties the mark Kennard cleared two weeks ago at the Kentucky Invitational. Kennard couldn't clear her next progression of 4.02m/13-02.25, which would have broken the school record she already holds (12-11.50). Senior Samantha Stenzel recorded a new season-best height of 3.72m/12-02.50 to finish in a tie for fifth.
Parker finished 11th in the women's long jump after leaping a career-long 5.71m/18-09.00. Parker broke her previous career-best leap of 5.63m/18-05.75 set last season at the Rod McCravy Memorial. Parker scratched in each of her first two jumps before recording her career-best jump. Freshman Candice Taylor competed in the long jump for the first time this season and finished with a 5.49m/18-00.25.
Freshmen Todd Nibbs and Ryan Ratliff each tied their collegiate career-best jumps of 1.94m/6-04.25 in the men's high jump. Each of the freshmen cleared the same height two weeks ago.
Freshman Bradley Szypka threw a new career-best distance in the men's weight throw. Szypka, a native of Curtice, Ohio, threw 15.92m/52-02.75 on Friday, bettering his previous collegiate best by 0.1m/03.75.
In addition to Kentucky, 16 other schools are competing at the Rod McCravy Memorial. Cincinnati, Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky have each of their men's and women's teams competing at the Nutter Field House. Miami (Ohio), Murray State, Ohio State, UCF and Vanderbilt have their women's teams competing, and Bellarmine has selected athletes competing.
The Rod McCravy Memorial meet will continue Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ET with the women's high jump and the women's triple jump. The two-day meet will conclude at 5:05 p.m. with the men's 4x400-meter relay.
