Kentucky Men Score Top National Relay Times
The 12th-ranked Kentucky menís swimming squad holds the nationís fastest times in the 200, 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays, according to the College Quick 50 listings released this past weekend.
The Kentucky 200 freestyle relay team of seniors Tim Patrick and Clay Gasparovich and juniors Steven Manley and Daniel Farnham turned in a top national time of 1:19.36 at the Indiana Invitational on Nov. 19. The next day, seniors Jerram Chudleigh and Daniel Cruz joined Farnham and Manley to clock a 6:31.91 in the 800 free relay, also good for No. 1, nationally. Farnham, Patrick, Cruz and Manley wrapped up competition in the Indiana Invitational with a school-record time of 2:55.69 in the 400 freestyle relay to complete a trifecta of top national relay times, all in one weekend.
All told, no fewer than 13 Kentucky menís and womenís swimmers hold 32 positions in the top-50 individual event listings and 10 places in relay events. Only one school, Florida, holds more top national menís swimming times than Kentuckyís three. The Gatorsí Ryan Lochte, a 2004 Athens Olympic medalist, holds all four top national swim times for Florida.
Chudleigh leads the UK men with top-50 placings in seven individual and relay events, including the nationís 10th-fastest time in the 200 backstroke. Manley holds five top-50 placings, including the second-fastest time in the 500 freestyle and the eighth-fastest time in the 200 freestyle. Cruz holds the nationís third-fastest time in the 100 butterfly and fourth-fastest time in the 200 butterfly, where he placed third at the 2004 NCAA Championships. Patrick holds the fourth-best time in the 50 freestyle and the 10th-best showing in the 100 freestyle. Farnham comes in at No. 5 nationally in the 100 freestyle and 16th in the 50 freestyle.
The UK women hold top-50 placings in five relay events, including the fifth-fastest time in the 200 medley relay. Junior Laura Graham holds the nationís eighth-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke and the ninth-fastest time in the 100 breaststroke. Senior Jessica Siegeleís time of 54.94 in the 100 backstroke is good for eighth in the country. Junior Shantel Commander comes in at No. 12 in the 200 breaststroke, and freshmen Jenny and Heather Bradford added top-50 times in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, respectively.
