Men's Swimming Qualifies Two For NCAA Championships
March 10, 2000
LEXINGTON, KY. - The 2000 NCAA Men's Swimming participants were announced today and Macon White and Shaun Zitani of the University of Kentucky men's swimming team will represent the squad at the meet in Minneapolis, Minn., March 23-25.
"We're very happy Macon and Shaun made it," UK coach Gary Conelly said. "We are a little disappointed because because we felt like we were on the edge of getting a relay there. We are pretty confident that Clayton (Moss), one of our divers, will make it, so that'll be three going to the meet which will be good for us."
White, who just missed the NCAA automatic in the 200 freestyle by three one-hundredths, will compete in the 200-meter and the 400-meter freestyle events. The Huntington, W. Va., native is seeded eighth in the 200 freestyle and 22nd in the 400 freestyle. At the 1999 NCAA meet, White just missed qualifying for the consolation after a swim off in the 200 freestyle.
Zitani, the only swimmer on the men's squad to meet qualify for the meet automatically, met the NCAA "A" cut in the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.75. Zitani will also swim the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. He is seeded 13th in the 50 freestyle, 25th in the 100 butterfly, and 37th in the 100 freestyle.
Divers for the meet will be selected based on performance at the NCAA Zone
"B" Diving Championships, being held this weekend at the James E. Martin
Aquatic Center on the campus of Auburn University.
