LEXINGTON, Ky. - University of Kentucky divers Christa Cabot and John Fox finished 13th and 17th, respectively, in the first day of competition at the 2013 USA Diving Winter National Championships in Austin, Texas, Tuesday.
"John was steady and smooth all competition," UK diving coach Ted Hautau said. "He just missed the timing on his last dive. Christa dove really well. She missed one dive, which is currently a work in progress. They both competed very well in a great field of divers. I was pleased with both of them."
Cabot placed 13th among 33 divers in the women's 1-meter springboard. The junior scored a 241.05, and was just over eight points shy of a berth in the top 10. Cabot placed third amongst divers from fellow Southeastern Conference teams. The top eight competitors advanced to the finals.
Fox was 17th in the men's 1-meter springboard and competed against 22 other divers. The senior notched a final score of 287.20.
The six-day event continues through Dec. 22, where a total of 10 national titles will be awarded. Fox and former UK diver Corey Cowger will also compete in the 3-meter competition. quarterfinals and semifinals will be on Dec. 18, while the finals will be held on Dec. 21.
The winter nationals will be used to select the divers who will represent the United States in both individual and synchronized diving events at 2014 FINA Grand Prix meets as well as the individual events for the 2014 FINA World Cup.
