UK Swimming Teams Conclude Nike Cup Invitational

Lexington, Ky. - The University of Kentucky men's and women's swimming teams finished competition at the Nike Cup Invitational on Sat., Nov. 23, with fourth and sixth-place finishes, respectively. The UK men accumulated 395 points for the event while the women tallied 330 points. The host North Carolina Tarheels won both sides of the event.
Junior Joey Faltraco was the story for the men on the final day. The Union Mills, N.C., native enjoyed the return to his home state as he won both the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard backstroke. Faltraco swam NCAA "B" cut times in both events, clocking a 1:47.21 in the 200 butterfly and a 1:44.23 in the 200 backstroke. Freshman Daniel Farnham gave a strong effort for the Cats in the 100 freestyle. He finished in fourth-place with a time of 45.59. Senior Roger Watkins won the "B" final and finished with the fifth-best overall time in the 200 breastroke (2:01.32). Daniel Cruz swam a 1:48.67 to win the "B" final in the 200 butterfly.
For the UK women, freshman Shantel Commander brought home a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:17.77. That effort earned Commander an NCAA "B" cut. Fellow freshman Brennan Moore continued her strong season in the distance freestyle by finishing fifth in the 1,650 free (16:47.02), also making a "B" cut. Cami Miller (16:58.82) and Caitlin Muldoon (16:59.39) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the event.
The UK teams will next return home to host the Missouri Tigers in dual meet competition
on Dec. 7. That meet is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at the Lancaster Aquatic Center on
the UK campus. The meet is open to the public and admission is free.
