Nov. 22, 2002
Lexington, Ky. - The University of Kentucky men's and women's swimming teams stand in fifth and sixth-place, respectively, at the Nike Cup Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., with one day remaining in the competition. The UK men have scored 253 points through the first two days while the women have tallied 176.
Freshman Steven Manley continued to swim well for the men today, Fri., Nov. 22, as he won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:37.91. Junior Joey Faltraco took home a second-place finish in the 400 IM, finishing in 3:52.49. Both those times are good enough for NCAA "B" cuts. The 800 freestyle relay team finished in fourth-place and the 200 medley relay team captured a fifth-place finish for the Cats.
A freshman highlighted day two of the event for the UK women, also, as Joanna Chetcuti-McLean swam a "B" cut time (56.61) in taking third-place in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Chrissy Miller gave a strong performance for the second consecutive day as she swam a "B" cut time and won the "B" final of the 200 freestyle. Her 1:49.62 was the fifth-best time overall in the event. The swimming teams will conclude the Nike Cup competition on Saturday, Nov. 21, as they look to move up in the final standings.
Meanwhile, the Kentucky diving teams gave a good showing in the first day of the Indiana
Invitational. Senior All-American Clayton Moss finished third on the three-meter
springboard with a score of 528.60. Freshman Jessica Thompson scored a 271.80 as she
finished in third-place on the one-meter board. The diving teams will be back in action on
Saturday, Nov. 23, in the second day of the three-day event.
