Rifle Hosts TCU in Final Fall Match of Season
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Kentucky rifle team returns to action in its final match of the fall season, playing host to TCU, on Saturday at UK’s Barker Hall.
“This is our final fall match of the season, so we really want to close out the fall semester on a positive note,” Kentucky head coach Harry Mullins said. “We need to come out and post some positive numbers, because our numbers have started to slide a bit in the past few matches. That just presents more fuel for the team to come out and perform well.”
Kentucky (7-0, 3-0 Great American Rifle Conference) enters the match having breezed through its fall semester slate, posting wins over national contenders Nebraska, Ole Miss, N.C. State, and West Virginia. UK’s biggest win of the season came in an early season upset win over the defending NCAA Champion Alaska-Fairbanks.
“We are certainly capable of posting good scores, as we have proven earlier this season,” Mullins said. “We need to get the team focused and show some unity throughout the season and focus on limiting our mistakes. TCU will present a challenge and our team will need to come out with some intensity.”
Leading the charge for Kentucky has been several individuals, including sophomore shooters Tom Csenge and Jen Pason. Pason, the 2006-07 GARC Rookie of the Year, posted the match-high score of UK’s win over WVU, a 592 air rifle total. Csenge, who battled it out with Pason for the Rookie of the Year honor as a freshman last season, is one of the top shooters in the country, recording the then-best combined collegiate score in the nation.
“Practice has been really good this past week,” Mullins detailed. “Everyone is working really hard and staying focused on the task at hand. This will be a good opportunity for the team to get some good competition before traveling to compete in various competitions.”
The match begins at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, and live stats will be available on UKathletics.com.
