Kentucky Falls to No. 1 TCU
Nov. 17, 2012
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Kentucky rifle team recorded its first loss the year, falling to top-ranked TCU 4718 - 4693 Saturday.
The Wildcats took an early lead, going up 796 - 792 after prone. TCU gained traction in standing and continued to add to the lead in kneeling, ahead 2348 - 2327 following smallbore. On the backs of freshman Connor Davis tying a school record with a 597, Kentucky recorded a 2366 in air rifle.
"Overall, we can't be too disappointed in our score," UK head coach Harry Mullins said. "We had a lot of places where we lost points that we can recover with the proper mental approach and training."
"It is never easy after a loss but they are a very good team," Mullins said. "The score they shot today was a great performance. We need to learn from this and move forward in the direction that we expect from ourselves."
TCU broke the 4700 mark for a fourth time on the year, led by senior Sarah Scherer's 594 in smallbore and 596. Caitlin Morrissey delivered a 594 in air rifle.
"We will go into the break with an idea of what we need to get done," Mullins said. "Now is the time to get to work and breakthrough to the next level."
The Wildcats will take a winter break before returning to action Jan. 13 in Murray, Ky., to take on Alaska-Fairbanks.
"It was really nice to have the setup today for the spectators," Mullins said. "We were pleased with the turnout and plan to host fans again this season."
