LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following a pair of wins last Saturday, the recharged and ready Kentucky Wildcats men’s tennis team is headed out to Chicago for the next match in a tough string of road tests this season, facing No. 21 Northwestern, Saturday at 2 p.m. in Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats enter the matchup with Northwestern at 6-1 on the season after a pair of 6-0 sweeps on Saturday afternoon, first against the Murray State Racers before also defeating the Dayton Flyers. Eight members of the team competed in the two outings, with freshman Ryotaro Matusumura leading the way at the No. 1 singles position. Sophomores Jake Stefanik and Gus Benson also added a pair of wins in the two matches. Classmate William Bushamuka continued to stay unbeaten, earning a win on the second court against Dayton to remain 6-0 in singles play this season.
In the Feb. 10 singles and doubles rankings, Bushamuka made an enormous leap, climbing from No. 79 to No. 25 in the nation following wins over two top-15 opponents early in the season, including a win over reigning NCAA singles champion Ryan Shane. He and senior Beck Pennington, despite not playing doubles together in the dual season, jumped from No. 58 to the No. 23 doubles pair in the country.
Northwestern, sitting at 7-1 on the season with the lone loss coming at the hands of No. 7 Illinois, boasts three singles players in the national top 125. Konrad Zieba clocks in at No. 14, while teammates Sam Shropshire and Strong Kirchheimer come in at No. 57 and No. 77.
