UKXC to Compete at NCAA Southeast Regional

EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The Kentucky cross country teams will begin NCAA Championship competition at the Southeast Regional, hosted by the University of Virginia, on Friday.

The women’s 6,000-meter race at Panorama Farms will fire at noon, while the men’s 10K is scheduled for 1 p.m. UVA will provide live results. Admission to the meet is free, but there is a $5 parking fee.

The top-two teams and top-four individuals at each of the nine regional meets will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday, Nov. 21. Thirteen teams will also earn at-large bids to be announced on Saturday, Nov. 14.

The Kentucky men’s team is coming off a fourth-place showing at the Southeastern Conference Championships two weeks ago, which was its best finish since taking the same place in 2011.

Sophomore Jacob Thomson led the way for the Wildcats with a significant personal best 8,000-meter time of 23:34.40 to finish fourth overall.

The Kentucky women’s team placed 12th at the SEC Championships, led by Katy Kunc who finished 25th in 20:41.00.

Last season the UK men produced a top 10 finish, ninth overall with 353 points, at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Louisville. Katy Kunc led the women’s team to a 12th-place finish at Regionals a year ago.

The Southeast Region is one of the better ones in the nation featuring four top-30 women’s teams.

The men’s region includes five top-30 national teams: No. 10 NC State, No. 12 Virginia, No. 13 Furman, No. 18 Virginia Tech and No. 26 Eastern Kentucky.
