Thomasson Honored as SEC Player of the Week

Nov. 11, 2013

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following her record-breaking performance against LSU on Sunday, freshman Anni Thomasson has earned Southeastern Conference Player of the Week accolades it was announced on Monday afternoon.

Thomasson simply had a match for the ages in UK’s five-set victory over LSU on Sunday. She became what is believed to be the first freshman in program history and just the second in UK allure to tally 30 or more kills and 20 or more digs in a single match. She joins Molly Dreisbach as the only other player to achieve the feat. Dresibach had 33 kills and 26 digs in Nov. 26, 1994 vs. Duke.

Furthermore, she is the first SEC player to turn the 30-20 trick since Kayla Fitterer of Alabama in 2010. The last UK player to record 30 kills in a match was Sarah Spinner’s 36 in 2004.

The freshman from Newark, Ohio, struck for her 30th kill of the night on the match-clinching point. She smashed for her tallies at a .373 hitting clip, and countered her offensive highlights with a career-high 22-dig performance. She was also perfect in the serve-receive game as she was errorless on 29 attempts. Thomasson received the final serve of the match from LSU before finishing the play with the match-clinching kill.

Thomasson opened the weekend with a12-kill performance against South Carolina. In all, Thomasson has now reached the double-figure kill plateau in four-straight conference matches.

In two matches this weekend, she averaged a blistering 5.25 kills per set on a .341 hitting percentage. She also contributed 3.12 digs per stanza and a squad-high 5.56 points.

The honor is the second weekly accolade for the freshman, but the first Player of the Week award. She was previously the league’s Freshman of the Week on Sept. 16.
