Morgan Bergren Named SEC Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Morgan Bergren has been named the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Week it was announced Monday afternoon. The honor is the first of the Muncie, Ind., native's career and is the second weekly honor of the season for the Blue and White.

Bergren saw her first career action in a win over Duquesne before starting the final two matches of the Ameritas Players Challenge on the campus of the University of Nebraska. For the week, Bergren averaged 11.10 assists, 2.30 digs and 1.20 blocks per set.

Against the No. 1 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers she turned in her most complete performance to date in just her second career start. In front of 4,163 fans, Bergren notched her first career double-double effort with a UK single-season high of 47 assists to go along with 10 digs. She also tallied four kills and five blocks. Furthermore, she guided the Wildcats to a .266 attacking clip which included a 20-kill, .459 attacking percentage performance by senior Ashley Frazier.

In her first career action against Duquesne, she passed out 22 assists and led UK to a .413 attacking percentage in two sets of action. She followed that with her first career start against Oklahoma, a team receiving votes in the latest coaches poll, tallying 42 assists, four digs and four blocks.

The honor is the first for Bergren. It is the second weekly honor of the season for Kentucky following Alexandra Morgan's SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor following the first week of the season.

Bergren and the Wildcats will return to action, Sunday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. ET in the home SEC opener against Florida.
