Oregon-Clemson Postgame Quotes

Dec. 4, 2009

Recap | Box Score

Oregon Head Coach Jim Moore

Opening statement ...

"The pace was slow so I don't know if we ever got in rhythm. The first round is always difficult, especially with the number of freshman that we have on the team. I thought it was good to get that out of the way and hopefully we can dig a few more balls. It's just a very good way to get through that first round. The players did a good job of just staying focused and kept talking about getting the next game."

On what Clemson did that was successful ...

"They ran their slide very well. A couple of times they were hitting over us. They did a very good job out of the middle. In the middle and on the slide they were hitting over the top of us which doesn't happen very often."

On whether this was a good defensive night for the team...

"No. This was definitely not one of our better defensive performances without a question. We didn't dig any balls. Without question this was one of our weakest defensive matches. Again, it is hard when you don't have a lot of rhythm and we just couldn't get into a rhythm tonight. The pace was just really slow which is strange for a NCAA match. It was hard to really get into the game."

Oregon Players

#6, Sonja Newcombe, OH

On how you felt throughout the game...

"I felt like we were pretty nervous to start off. I thought we had a few jitters and were not too precise with our movements, and so that got us a little rattled at the beginning. We did a good job coming together and hitting the ball."

On starting all three sets down, and then coming back...

"I knew that we were struggling with our rhythm at that point and that we started slow, but I don't think it really affected us. We try not to pay attention to the score, but I knew what the score was. Hopefully my team mates didn't."

#10, Heather Meyers, OH

On how you felt throughout the game...

"I have to agree with what Heather and coach said, they pretty much summed up everything. I think we definitely came in anxious. It was a different atmosphere that we played in tonight. We had our fans, but it wasn't like what we usually play in. We were telling ourselves to try to work on getting ourselves pumped up. Sometime it was up and down, but we were trying to not let it get too quiet on the court."

On how tough it was to get pumped up with a slower pace game...

"It connected, definitely. In practice we like things fast, and we want to try to carry that out into the game. So hopefully we carry that momentum into tomorrow."

On your early serving...

"Well a lot of my serving, I try to hit the ball as hard as I can. I try not to think a lot when I serve. It's about swinging the ball hard, and doing what I do. When I am not in rhythm, that is when I look around and think who can I go to. The first couple of serves is about getting it in and hitting the ball as hard as I can."

Clemson Head Coach Jolene Jordan

Opening statement ...

"It is tough to lose 3-0. We had to many errors on the night and I feel that they brought a lot with their serves. They kind of took our service team a part on a couple of rotations and I think that was the key to the match. We stayed with them for the most part of all three games. It seemed that we lead throughout the first part of each game but for some reason the back half of the game, we just couldn't score."

On the pace of the game ...

"We play our home games in a very tight and intimate environment. In this arena the crowd sits back and there isn't as much crowd interaction. We were in an uncomfortable area and that leads you to maybe feeling like that. I don't think that it affected our players."

On if she felt that if they won game two they would be in good shape to make a run ...

"Yeah, it is really tough when you are down 2-0 instead of when you are even. Your eyes become a lot bigger. Sandra [Adeleye] played really well. We were able to score a lot with her up and we tried to capitalize on that. We had to maximize how many times she was across the front row and that might have been part of the reason we were in the situation we were. It seemed like when Sandra was in the game we were okay, but when she was off the court that's when we seemed to struggle."
