Women's Tennis Travels to Ohio State Wednesday

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 34th-ranked University of Kentucky women's tennis team travels to Columbus, Ohio to take on No. 38 Ohio State Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match begins at 1 p.m. EST.

The Wildcats (1-3) are coming off a second-round 4-2 setback to No. 10 Georgia Tech at the ITA Kickoff Weekend qualifier Sunday in Atlanta, Ga. Kentucky had defeated No. 24 Alabama 4-3 on Saturday to advance in the tournament.

Sophomore Caroline Lilley (Portland, Ore.) posted two singles wins over ranked opponents last weekend. Lilley upset No. 82 Alexa Guarachi of Alabama in a super tiebreaker 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 (11-9) on Saturday before taking down No. 66 Sasha Krupina of Georgia Tech in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday. Lilley is 3-1 overall in singles action this spring, including a 2-0 mark at No. 2 singles.

Junior Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) and senior Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio) are both 2-2 in singles action this season. Broderick has played all four of her singles matches at No. 1, while Johnston has played three of her four matches at No. 3 singles.

"Ohio State is a well coached, deep squad," UK head coach Carlos Drada said. "It's going to be another challenge for us, but we hope the experiences we gained last week in Atlanta will help us gain confidence in learning how to overcome obstacles.

"Our goal against Ohio State is to compete well and give our best effort mentally as a team throughout the match."

Ohio State (5-1) upset No. 15 Fresno State 6-1 in ITA Kickoff Weekend action in Fresno, Calif., Saturday. The Buckeyes dropped a 6-1 decision to Florida State in second-round play on Sunday. Freshmen Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele lead the Buckeyes with 11 wins each this season.
