Pienaar Defeats Louisville's Irvin in Final Day of Match Play at UK Invite

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Despite dropping her first match of the tournament, Kentucky sophomore Minnette Pienaar went on to win her next three matches to win the consolation singles portion of Flight C. The tournament concluded Sunday morning, crowning four singles and two doubles winners from each bracket.
Pienaar defeated Ashley Irvin of in-state rival UofL after an intense super breaker. The Wildcat took the first set 6-3 but couldn't grab the second falling 7-6(3). In the place of a third set, the pair played a 10-point super breaker. Pienaar took the lead and never succumbed to the Cardinal winning it all 10-6.
Before she reached Sunday's final Pienaar toppled members of East Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky. Pienaar only gave up two opponent games against ETSU's Andra Voinea and grabbed a 6-4, 6-1 victory over EKU's Anouk Foure.
Sunday morning Pienaar and fellow Wildcat Caroline Lilley played doubles against AASU's Alida Mueller-Wehlau and Martina Beckmann. The match remained neck-and-neck but the Division II champions of Armstrong Atlantic State came out on top, 8-6.
Two members of AASU left with tournament titles, Sona Novakova in Flight A and Mueller-Wehlau in Flight B. The Big Ten also claimed two as Ohio State's Fidar Manashirova won Flight C and Taylor Fournier of Michigan took Flight D. In doubles, Erica Robertson and Heather Steinbauer of Vanderbilt and the Southeastern Conference claimed the doubles title in Flight B and Virginia's Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra found victory in doubles of Flight A.
