Women's Tennis Loses Heartbreaker to LSU, 4-3

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team opened SEC play at home against No. 43 LSU and lost in one of its closest matches of the season thus far. The Tigers traveled to the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex and narrowly defeated the Wildcats, 4-3.
The doubles matches set the tone for the day with each one requiring a battle. Sophomores Marni Venter and Cece Witten faced Ebie Wilson and Ariel Morton in the match with the largest margin as the Cats won, 8-4.
The closest match came from No. 55-ranked Jessica Stiles and Khristina Blajkevitch, who took on Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger. The duos were even throughout the entirety of the match, leading to a tiebreaker as both teams reached eight games. Wolf and Frankenberger were able to edge out Stiles and Blajkevitch, for a final result of, 9-8 (7-3).
The deciding doubles match came from sophomore Caitlin McGraw and freshman Edmée Morin-Kougoucheff. The two faced Olivia Howlett and Yvette Vlaar. Again, the match was close but the Tigers were able to take the victory, 8-4, and with it, the doubles point.
In singles, standout freshmen Stephanie Fox and Morin-Kougoucheff posted dominating results for the Wildcats. Morin-Kougoucheff occupied the No. 4 singles position, where she defeated Wilson, 6-0, 6-2. Fox followed suit at the No. 5 spot, taking the, 6-2, 6-1, victory over Frankenberger.
Sole upperclassman Jessica Stiles also grabbed a win for the Cats. She faced Wolf, sweeping the match in two sets for a, 6-2, 6-3, result.
As the singles progressed, the Cats and the Tigers tied it up at 3-3. Witten participated in the deciding match against Vlaar. Witten put up a fight in the second set, but ultimately fell to Vlaar, 6-2, 6-3.
