CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 26 Kentucky women’s tennis team’s comeback and upset bid fell short in a 4-2 loss to No. 13 Clemson at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.

The Wildcats (7-4) faced their third top-14 opponent in as many days at the event. UK is the lowest-ranked team to have advanced to the 16-team ITA National Indoor Championships.

UK lost the doubles point to the Tigers, with a 6-1 loss on court No. 1 by Kelsey Dieters and Mami Adachi and a 6-2 loss by Taylor Lederman and Nadia Ravita on No. 2 doubles.

Kentucky’s deficit became 2-0 when Dieters lost 6-1, 6-3 in No. 2 singles to No. 27 Joana Eidukonyte. The Wildcats answered with a win by Lederman on court six, 6-2, 6-4 over Daniela Ruiz.

Clemson pulled ahead 3-1 when Tristen Dewar defeated Caterina Brunamonti, 6-4, 6-1 on No. 5 singles, but the Wildcats again responded on court No. 1. Ravita defeated No. 85 Romy Koelzer, 7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 6-2.

The Tigers clinched the match with a tiebreaker win on court No. 4, when Kirsten Lewis fell to Jessy Rompies, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5.

When play concluded, Adachi was trailing Beatrice Gumulya, 4-6, 6-3, 5-6 after taking the match to a tiebreaker, one of four courts to go the extra frame.

Following the four-day ITA tournament, UK returns home on Feb. 15 to host Tulane at Noon and Eastern Kentucky at 6 p.m.
