Win Streak Hits Seven with Sweeps of Illinois, NKU
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The No. 26 Kentucky women's tennis team extended its winning streak to seven consecutive matches with a pair of 4-0 wins over No. 46 Illinois and Northern Kentucky Tuesday at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex.
The Wildcats (7-1) opened the day with a 4-0 victory over Illinois to hand the Illini their first loss of the season. In the nightcap, UK completed the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 win in the in-state clash vs. the Norse.
While no UK player lost a match, the Kentucky charge was led by sophomore Aldila Sutjiadi, who won two doubles matches and a pair of singles contests. Freshman Mami Adachi tallied three wins, two of them in singles, while junior Nadia Ravita and Kirsten Lewis each won twice, once in doubles and once in singles.
Kentucky began the day vs. the 46th-ranked Illini, the third ranked opponent for the Wildcats in the last 11 days.
Junior Kirsten Lewis and sophomore Taylor Lederman struck first with a 6-1 win on the No. 3 doubles court, and Ravita and Sutjiadi followed with a 6-3 win on the first doubles court to give UK a 1-0 lead going into singles competition.
Ravita cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 singles win over Alexis Casati on the No. 1 court, and Sutjiadi extended Kentucky's lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court No. 2. With a victory one point away though, the Wildcats had to work to earn the final tally.
With Adachi and senior Kelsey Dieters each in tight matches, it was Adachi that pulled away to earn a 6-4, 7-5 victory. The hard-fought win over Jerricka Boone on court No. 4 secured the match for Kentucky, 4-0. On court No. 3, Dieters lost the first set, 7-5 but rallied to lead the second, 5-1 before play was halted with Adachi's clincher.
Against Northern Kentucky in the second contest of the doubleheader, Kentucky looked to capitalize off its shutout performance earlier in the day. The Wildcats did just that with another 4-0 win over the Norse to extend the winning streak to seven.
Kentucky mixed up its doubles lineup, but the results did not change. Kate Lanier and Sutjiadi opened up with a win on No. 2 doubles, which was soon followed by a 6-2 victory on No. 1 doubles from Adachi and Kelsey Dieters to clinch the point for the Wildcats.
Sutjiadi won her match, 6-1, 6-1, in dominating fashion over NKU's Hailey Shanahan and increased the lead to 2-0 for the Wildcats. Soon to follow was Adachi at No. 2 singles with a win of her own. The 6-0, 6-2 victory downed Rhenna Morehart and gave Kentucky a 3-0 lead, needing only one more point to clinch the match.
Lewis clinched the match for Kentucky with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Northern Kentucky's Sydney Power. The Birmingham, Ala., native came back to win in the first set after being down 2-5.
The Wildcat's lead was increased to 5-0 after Caterina Brunamonti took down Danielle Donahue, 6-3, 6-3. Kate Lanier continued to play in No. 6 singles and defeated Australian Yasmine Xantos, 7-5.
Kentucky travels to Charlottesville, Va., for the ITA National Indoor Championships. The Wildcats make their first appearance in the 16-team tournament since 2005.
