Joiner Named SEC All-Defensive Catcher by League Coaches
BATON ROUGE, La. -- University of Kentucky senior catcher Griffin Joiner has been named to the Southeastern Conference All-Defensive Team by league coaches, marking the third consecutive season the native of Hopkinsville, Ky., has received the honor, it was announced Tuesday.
Joiner, who has started all 243 games of her collegiate career -- including 239 of those games at catcher -- is the first catcher in league history to be named SEC All-Defensive catcher three straight seasons after earning the award her sophomore and junior years. The honor is the fifth All-SEC honor for Joiner, who joins former UK stars Megan Yocke and Molly Johnson-Belcher as the only players in program history to reach that achievement.
The honor marked the 10th consecutive year a UK player has been named an All-SEC performer. In head coach Rachel Lawson's eight years at UK, she has led 10 players to 26 All-SEC honors.
Joiner is having a great year behind the plate, leading the team with 1.000 fielding percentage, which takes her career fielding percentage to a school-record tying .992. The senior has locked down some of the fastest teams in the nation, limiting opponents to just five stolen bases this season with eight runners caught stealing.
The school's all-time leader in putouts has 341 this season and 1,516 for her career. During her four years in Lexington, Joiner has caught over 26,000 pitches with only 11 passed balls and she has been the catcher for five no-hitters. Joiner has caught four of the school's top-six leaders in wins in Kelsey Nunley, Chanda Bell, Rachel Riley and Lauren Cumbess.
Offensively, Joiner is hitting .302 this season with a team-best 11 home runs and 39 RBI. Joiner's 11 homers take her career total to 35 roundtrippers, which is tied for second most in program history. The catcher ranks top-10 in school history in several offensive categories, including batting average, doubles, home run, RBI and slugging percentage.
Joiner will lead Kentucky into the SEC Tournament on Wednesday against fifth-seeded Tennessee at 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network. The Wildcats are trying to make a return trip to the SEC Championship game after a thrilling run through the tournament last season.
