DeMartine Named to SEC Community Service Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore Samantha DeMartine has been named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team it was announced Tuesday. DeMartine is one of 11 softball athletes tabbed for the honor.

The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to her community in superior service efforts.

DeMartine has participated in various community service events including serving as a volunteer at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, God's Pantry Food Drive, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Kentucky Special Olympics Bowling, Ronald McDonald House, FSMA Walk, UK Children's Hospital Activity Night, UK FUSION, Big Blue U.-event welcoming incoming freshmen, UK Athletes Canned Food Drive.

The kinesiology and health promotion education major was also named to the Fall 2008 Dean's List.

UK's starting first baseman has enjoyed an outstanding sophomore campaign on the field as well. She has started all 51 games and recorded a career-high 274 put outs. Twice this season she has set the single-game UK record with 19 put outs in a game. Not only has she been a steady contributor on the field, she has set career-highs in a number of offensive categories including batting average at .229 for the season.

DeMartine and the Wildcats will return to the field on Thursday in the first round of the SEC Tournament. UK faces Georgia in the opening game at 11 a.m. ET.
