The University of Kentucky softball team got back to its winning ways with a doubleheader sweep of Morehead State Wednesday at the UK Softball Complex. The Wildcats (8-13) had a season high nine hits in the 10-0 win in the opening game and then beat that mark in the second with 12 hits en route to a 9-1 victory. The Eagles fell to 2-9-1 on the season.
In the first game, the bats came alive for the Cats in the first and second innings as they were able to put all ten runs of the game on the board in the first two frames. In the bottom of the first, seven of the first eight batters got on base. Four hits added with a Morehead error put UK up 5-0 after one.
A one-two-three top of the second brought Kentucky up again. Sophomore Brook Bowman got things started with her second hit of the day. Senior Lyndsey Angus stepped to the plate and knocked her team-leading third home run of the season over the center field fence. After freshman Ingrid Lochelt reached first on an error, sophomore Bobbi Darretta, playing in her first game as a Wildcat, hit a double to the gap in right center, scoring Lochelt. A two-run single by senior Nikki Jones gave Kentucky another five-run inning and a 10-0 lead.
On the mound, Amy Kendall gave up a season-low two hits for her fifth victory of the season. When UK held the Eagles in the top of the fifth, the game ended because of the eight-run rule.
Jones started the bottom of the first with her second double of the day. After two straight Kentucky batters were retired, six singles and a walk meant six runs for UK. Senior Amanda Brown got her first career hit in the inning. The Cats added two runs in the top of the second to go ahead 8-0.
