Kayla King, Kelli Hubly Earn SEC Weekly Honors

Oct. 15, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team earned two of the three Southeastern Conference weekly honors, as junior Kayla King was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Kelli Hubly was awarded SEC Freshman of the week, it was announced Monday by the league office.

Junior Kayla King had her best weekend in the Blue and White, recording back-to-back, 90-minute shutouts on the road at Tennessee and Georgia. The Louisville, Ky., native had a career high 10 saves Sunday in Athens and kept a clean sheet vs. Tennessee on Friday night as the Wildcats picked up a crucial six points. King fended off 36 shots over the two games and dropped her goals against average to 0.81 on the season. The back-to-back shutout performance was a career first for King, as she had recorded one prior in her career entering the weekend.

Freshman Kelli Hubly added to her team lead, scoring her fifth goal of the season in Knoxville, Tenn., as UK charted a win over Tennessee. The tally was the game’s only goal, and was struck in the 70th minute. The game winner was Hubly’s second of the season, who now stands second on the team with 12 points. This is Hubly’s second SEC award of the season as she earned SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 17.

Kentucky completed its first-ever SEC-weekend road sweep under head coach Jon Lipsitz, defeating Tennessee and Georgia. The win over Georgia on Sunday afternoon was the Cats’ first win over UGA since the 1999 season and first in Athens, Ga., since 1998. The Wildcats defeated the Lady Vols on Friday evening for the third time in the last four tries.

UK will return home for the first time in the month of October on Friday, where the Wildcats will finish out the season with three-straight home games. Kentucky will face South Carolina on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex in a game that will be shown live on Fox Sports South. Dave Baker and Katie Witham will have the call from Lexington.
