March 3, 2010

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- - The University of Kentucky gymnastics team competes in the first of three consecutive non-Southeastern Conference meets Friday when it travels to Kent, Ohio to take on Kent State at the MAC Center. The dual meet is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. EST.

Kentucky (4-6) owns a 195.495 regional qualifying score and ranks No. 15 in the latest GymInfo rankings. The Wildcats have ranked among the nation's top 15 teams for eight consecutive weeks with top-25 rankings in all four events. UK is listed at 10th on the floor (49.090), 14th on the vault (49.070), 15th on the bars (48.895) and 22nd on the beam (48.460). Kentucky finished the regular-season portion of its SEC slate with a 1-5 league record.

"We're looking to gather some good scores on the road over the next few weeks," head coach Mo Mitchell said. "I'm excited with the events that we're having success with, but our focus now is to get that fourth event (the balance beam) where it needs to be. We're a better team than that."

UK is coming off a 197.225-195.650 setback to then-second ranked Alabama on Feb. 26 that saw the Wildcats win the floor exercise, but lose the three other events plus the all-around competition.

UK topped the Crimson Tide 49.275-49.075 on the floor exercise with Jasmine Minion (Memphis, Tenn.) and Hillary Ferguson (Richmond, Ky.) tying for second place with a 9.875. Minion, along with teammates Andrea Mitchell (Knoxville, Tenn.), who charted a 9.850, and Phylicia Reshard (West Chester, Ohio), who scored a 9.825, each tied their career-high scores on the floor exercise. Emilie Rymer (Medina, Ohio) posted a season-high 9.850 on the uneven bars to lead UK and tie for third place. Whitney Rose (Frisco, Texas) led all Wildcats and tied for fourth on the vault with a 9.900. Rose has scored a 9.900 or better on the vault in five meets this season and has won five titles on the event. Emily Green (Penfield, N.Y.) led UK on the beam with a 9.775.

The Wildcats return home for Senior Day on March 12 when they play host to Illinois State and George Washington in a tri-meet at Memorial Coliseum. The first rotations are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Kentucky closes out its regular-season schedule at highly ranked Oregon State on March 19. The SEC Championships take place March 27 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Kent State (7-2) enters Friday's meet with the highest RQS score of any Mid-American Conference member at 194.180. The Golden Flashes are listed at No. 27 in the nation.

Kent State improved to 4-0 in the MAC and extended its conference home win streak to 17 meets with a 194.500-193.150 victory over Ball State last Friday.

The Golden Flashes are ranked 19th on the floor (48.830), 24th on the uneven bars (48.715) and 26th on the vault (48.815).
