White Squad Tops Blue in Annual Scrimmage

Dec. 13, 2008

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Kentucky gymnastics team opened the 2009 season with their annual Blue-White Scrimmage. The White team outperformed the Blue squad Saturday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum.

“Today we got an idea of where we are,” said head coach Mo Mitchell. “There are some areas where we are strong, and there are other areas we need to work on. This was some of the girls’ first time in a competition setting, so we need to work on their confidence. We achieved what we set out to accomplish, and are looking forward to Excite Night.”

Senior Natalie Rubinstein returned to the uneven bars for the first time since 2006.The Hollywood, Fla., native had a strong performance, taking the event’s title.

Returning senior Heather Hite led both squads on the balance beam. Last season, Hite was Kentucky’s beam leader and holds 19 career titles on the event. Junior Hillary Ferguson, a strong performer from 2008, took the all-around title.

The intra-squad meet was just the beginning to what will be an exciting home schedule for the Wildcats in 2009. The Wildcats are set to host nine teams in Memorial Coliseum and will face eight teams ranked in the top-25 of the preseason polls, including all six conference opponents, No. 1 Georgia, No. 3 Florida, No. 6 Alabama, No. 7 LSU, No. 12 Arkansas and No. 15 Auburn. Also in that list are No. 16 Illinois and No. 23 West Virginia.

The top-25 team, which only lost three letter winners and returns 11 gymnasts with three newcomers, kicks off their twelve-meet season with Excite Night on Jan. 10th at 5:45 p.m. ET against Utah State.
