UK Women's Golf Begins Spring Season at UCF Challenge
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Nearly four months removed from their last tournament, the Kentucky women’s golf team will return to action for its spring season opener Sunday through Tuesday at the UCF Challenge, hosted at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
The UCF Challenge marks the first of four tournaments before the team opens postseason play with the Southeastern Conference Tournament and NCAA regionals in April and May, respectively.
UK will use the lineup of sophomore Haley Mills, junior Sarah Harris, junior Cylia Damerau, sophomore Ale Walker and freshman Isabelle Johansson. Freshman Grace Rose will compete in the individual portion.
“We are excited to kick off the season in Orlando,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “This is a great event that we keep coming back to because our girls really like the layout of the golf course. I think this track will suit us well coming out of the winter months and I'm looking forward to seeing us play tournament golf again."
Led by Damerau, the Wildcats made a last-day push for fourth place at the 2014 tournament, one of eight top-10 finishes for Kentucky during the 2013-14 season. UK will be looking for its fourth such finish this season.
This marks the fourth time Kentucky will participate in the UCF Challenge. The Wildcats finished fourth in 2014, eighth in 2012 and fourth in 2011. Former Wildcat Ashleigh Albrecht tied for first place in the 2011 event with a final score of eight-under par.
Eighteen holes will be played Sunday through Tuesday at the par-72 (35-37), 6,349-yard setup at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Play begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
Joining the Wildcats are 17 teams that consist of No. 14 Vanderbilt, No. 17 Virginia, No. 21 UCF, Campbell, East Carolina, Iowa State, Louisville, Miami, Minnesota, Rollins, SMU, South Florida, Texas, Texas State, Tulane, Western Carolina and Wisconsin.

UK notched three top-10 finishes in the fall, including a tie for fifth place at the “MO”Morial Invitational. Mills was UK’s top performer in the fall, posting the best individual finish of any Wildcat in three of the four tournaments. She also owns UK’s lowest average, lowest 18-hole score and lowest 54-hole score of the season.
Following the UCF Challenge, UK will compete in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., from March 6-8.
