LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team closed its first round on a strong note Thursday in the East regional of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., and recorded its best first round since Feb. 27 with an 18-over par 306.

Four of Kentucky’s five golfers improved on their back nines in comparison to their front nines. The Wildcats finished day one in a tie for 18th place and sit just three strokes outside the top 15.

Sophomore Betsie Johnson led the Wildcats with a 3-over par 75. Johnson birdied the first hole at the Legends Course at LPGA International (6,271 yards, par 72) before finding trouble on No. 5 and eventually making the turn at 2-over par. The Nicholasville, Ky., native then pared each of the first eight holes on the back nine before bogeying the par 4 18th hole, which played as the fourth toughest on the course, to finish with a 1-over par 37 coming in. Johnson’s 75 is her second best round of the spring season.

Junior Ashlee Rose, sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht and freshman Liz Breed all turned in 5-over par 77s.

Rose, like Johnson, birdied the first hole of her round. Rose would later make the turn at 1-over par and came in with a 4-over par 40 after bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18.

Albrecht, the Wildcats’ leader in scoring average this season, paced the Cats with a team-high three birdies on her round, including each of the par 5s on the back nine.

Breed, a freshman from Waynesboro, Pa., showed a great amount of resilience in her opening round. After bogeying four holes on the front nine, Breed recorded just one hole over par on her back nine and finds herself in a tie for 69th place along with Rose and Albrecht.

Sophomore Heather Lott finished with a 12-over par 84 on Thursday.

Kentucky will begin its second round Friday from the 10th hole at 8:55 a.m. ET. Lott will tee off first for UK, followed by Rose, Breed, Albrecht and Johnson in 11-minute intervals. The Wildcats will be paired with Yale and Stetson again Friday.

Coastal Carolina leads the East regional after the first round with a 2-under par 286. The regional’s top seed, Alabama, is in second with a 1-under par 287. Jessica Alexander of Coastal Carolina and Jessica Negron of Florida State are co-leaders after the first round with a pair of 3-under par 69s.

The 72-team, 18-individual NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship field is split into three regions: the East (Daytona Beach), Central (Notre Dame, Ind.) and West (Auburn, Wash.). Each region will host 24 teams and six individuals not on those teams. The top eight teams from each of the three regions and the top two individuals, not on those teams, will then advance to the finals. The regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition. The finals will be held May 18-21 at the Traditions Club in Bryan-College Station, Texas, and will be hosted by Texas A&M.
