Women's Golf Opens Play at SEC Championships

April 15, 2011

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team closed out its first round Friday in a tie for 10th place at the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championships in Auburn, Ala., with sophomores Betsie Johnson and Ashleigh Albrecht leading the Cats.

Kentucky, as a team, finished its first round with a 27-over par 315 to sit in a tie for 10th place. Johnson and Albrecht each recorded 5-over par 75s for the Cats to lead the team individually and are tied for 35th overall.

Johnson led UK with four birdies on her round, including shooting 2-under par on the course’s four par 5s. The Nicholasville, Ky., native recorded two birdies on the front nine and two birdies on the back nine.

Albrecht birdied the par 3 17th hole and the par 4 third hole, but a double bogey on her 15th hole of the round pushed the Murrieta, Calif., native to 5-over.

Representing the Cats at the Auburn University Club (par 72, 6,364 yards), along with Albrecht and Johnson, is junior Ashlee Rose, sophomore Heather Lott and freshman Liz Breed. However, due to an injury, Breed had to withdraw from the championship after Friday’s competition.

“Today was a struggle for us,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We made some bogeys early in our rounds, but we were able to bounce back with some birdies. Unfortunately, we weren't able to finish well and we had to pull Liz off the course after she hit a root and injured her right hand. We don't know if she will be able to play tomorrow yet, but hopefully we can pull together as a team and focus on the positives over the next two days.”

Lott recorded an opening round 8-over par 80 to finish day one in a tie for 46th, while Rose shot a 9-over par 81 for the Wildcats and sits in 51st place.

Kentucky will again begin its round on the 10th hole Saturday, with Rose teeing off at 9:40 a.m. ET followed by Lott, Johnson and Albrecht, respectively, in 10-minute intervals.
