The Kentucky women’s golf team was led by sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht’s 3-over par, 75 in the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship at the English Turn Golf and Country Club (par 72, 6,105 yards) in New Orleans on Sunday.

Kentucky, competing in one of the most highly competitive tournaments of the spring season, finished the first round with a 17-over par 305 to end day one in 15th place.

"Today was a tough day for us," UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. "The wind increased throughout the day and that really challenged our girls. I feel like we did a lot of good things, but unfortunately we just didn't make enough birdies and par putts to make up for some of our bogeys. I think each of them dug deep for every shot they had and they learned a lot from today. We will build on this for tomorrow and Tuesday. There is still a lot of golf to be played and I am looking forward to seeing what the next two days have in store for us."

Albrecht, who like the rest of the Kentucky golfers began her round on the back nine, got into trouble to begin her round. After double bogeying two of her first five holes and standing at 5-over through her first six, Albrecht was able to regroup and shoot a score of 2-under par on her final 12 holes. Albrecht birdied four holes on the front nine, her second nine of the round, and came in with a score of 34.

Freshman Liz Breed shot a 4-over par, 76 in her opening round and sophomore Heather Lott and junior Ashlee Rose each shot 5-over par, 77s. Sophomore Megan Moir shot an opening 6-over par, 78.

The 17-team field competing at the English Turn Golf & Country Club will be one of the most competitive fields in collegiate golf. All 17 teams are ranked in the top 50 in the country, including seven of the top 10 teams and 12 of the top 25 teams. Ryan Harrington of Golf Digest ranked the three-day tournament as the second-best women’s collegiate tournament of the spring season.

Host school Tulane leads the tournament after round one with an even-par, 288. Duke’s Laetitia Beck is on top of the player leaderboard after one round of play. Laetitia carded a 6-under par, 66 on Sunday and holds a three stroke lead.
