KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Sara Hurwitch fired off a Kentucky career best 72 in the final round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic to lead the University of Kentucky women's golf team as they finish in a seventh place tie at Cougar Point Golf Course Tuesday.
"Sara Hurwitch led the Wildcats with a stellar 72 in very tough conditions," head coach Myra Blackwelder said. "When we teed off this morning, it was 35 degrees with 2-3 club constant wind. Kristin Vincent finished the tournament with a solid 74."
Hurwitch finished the Classic tied for 14th, a personal season best. The Sterling, Va., native led the team in birdies totaling eight over the three-day tournament.
Vincent came back in the final round to card a two-over-par 74 - good for a 43rd place tie. Mallory Blackwelder also finished the Classic tied for 43rd with a cumulative score of 231 (79-74-78).
The Wildcats claimed its fourth top-10 finish of the season shooting a 917 (312-302-303). The team shared seventh place with No. 28 Oregon who carded a 296 in the final round. Kentucky was three strokes away from the top-five and scored within four storkes of No. 27 Florida and No. 34 Mississippi.
"The team locked up another top-10 finish which was a good start to the spring season," Myra Blackwelder said. "We will use this as a spring board in our preparation for LSU in March."
The Wildcats will make their next appearance at the LSU/Cleveland Classic in Baton Rouge, La., March 13-15.
