Women's Golf Finishes 11th at UCF Challenge
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team completed play at the UCF Challenge on Tuesday, finishing 11th overall with a final team score of 21-over par, 885. Tough course conditions led to every team in the event finishing over par in Tuesday’s round.
“Today was a rough day. We got off to a good start and we looked really solid for the first nine holes, but the windy conditions picked up on our back nine and we struggled to control our ball flights and putting, which resulted in a poor round,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We now have three more rounds under our belt and we will continue to push hard to get better every day. We have two weeks before our next event and we need to work hard and stay focused as we prepare for it.”
Virginia and Tulane had a late-round battle for the overall team title with Virginia firing a 14-under par, 850, which bested Tulane (13-under par) by one shot. Rounding out the rest of the top five was UCF (6-under par) in third, Vanderbilt (five-under par) in fourth and Wisconsin and Iowa State (six-over par) in a tie for fifth.
Miami (Fla.) finished seventh at eight-over par, while Minnesota and Texas tied for eighth at 16-over par and East Carolina rounded out the top 10 at 19-over par. Finishing behind Kentucky in the standings was Louisville in 12th at 22-over par, SMU, Texas State and Campbell in a tie for 13th at 24-over par, Rollins College in 16th at 31-over par, South Florida in 17th at 32-over par and Western Carolina in 18th at 53-over par.
Individually, sophomore Haley Mills led the way for Kentucky and added another top-20 finish to her resume – her fourth this year. Mills fired a one-under par 71, on the first two days of play and finished at even par for the tournament.
Junior Sarah Harris set her new season-low 54-hole score Tuesday by posting a six-over par 222, which placed her inside the top 50 for the third time this year. Sophomore Ale Walker, a native of Paintsville, Ky., finished in a tie for 42nd with Harris at six-over par 222. Walker tied her season low 18-hole round of one-under par during Monday’s second round.
Freshman Isabelle Johansson finished her first collegiate tournament tied for 63rd and fired a one-under par 71 on the second day of competition. Behind Johansson was junior Cylia Damerau with a total of 12-over par 228, which was good for 69th.
Playing as an individual, freshman Grace Rose finished 88th at 17-over par 233. The Nicholasville, Ky. native had her career-best score of even par Monday in the second round.
Kentucky’s next tournament will be the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on March 6-7 at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
