Janee Thompson Named SEC Player of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky women's basketball junior point guard Janee Thompson was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats to wins over Northern Kentucky and No. 7 Louisville last week.
Thompson averaged a team-high tying 13.5 points and 4.5 steals in UK's undefeated week but was the star in UK's win at No. 7 Louisville on Sunday.
With the game knotted at 66 apiece and just 3:03 to play, Thompson hit a key 3-pointer to give UK a lead it would not relinquish. The 3-pointer was just three of her 16 points in the second half, to lead all scorers. She went 8-of-10 from the free throw line, including 7-of-8 in the second half against the Cards, while also collecting five rebounds, which was the second most of any player on the team. She also had a game-high four steals in the game.
On Wednesday night in UK's double-digit win over Northern Kentucky, Thompson had eight points with three rebounds and four assists. She also set a new season high with five steals in the contest.
Thompson currently ranks fourth on the team in scoring this season, averaging 10.6 points per game. The Chicago native has started all nine games and is tied for first in steals (16) and ranks second on the team in assists (20). She also leads Kentucky from the free throw line, making 29 of her 37 free throws (.784).
This marks UK's first SEC Player of the Week honor of the season and Thompson's first in her career.
The Wildcats return to Memorial Coliseum for back-to-back home games vs. Middle Tennessee on Friday, Dec. 12 at 9 p.m. ET and Belmont on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. ET. Both games will be televised on the SEC Network.
