Janee Thompson Named SEC Player of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s basketball junior point guard Janee Thompson was named the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats to two crucial wins last week over Alabama and Ole Miss.
Thompson, a native of Chicago, averaged 14.5 points and a team-high 6.5 assists in helping UK begin SEC play at 2-0 for the first time since 2012-13. She was critical in UK’s two come-from-behind victories as she combined for 27 of her 29 points all in the decisive second halves.
In the league lid lifter at Alabama, the Tide led by as many as 10 points (42-32) with 16:54 to go in the game, before Thompson rattled off seven straight points to help pull the Cats within three. She went on to chart her first career double-double (points/assists) with 12 points and a career-high 10 assists. It marked UK’s first points/assists double-double since Carly Ormerod vs. Ball State on March 19, 2007 and most assists in a single game since Omerod’s 11 in 2007.
Against Ole Miss, she posted 15 of her team-high 17 points in the second half, including the go-ahead layup with 2:22 to go in the game. She also added three assists and two steals.
Overall, Thompson is UK’s third-leading scorer this season with 10.6 points per game. She also dishes out a team-high 3.0 assists per game. This marks her second SEC Player of the Week honor of the season.
