Kentucky Head Coach Matthew Mitchell Quotes

Opening statement...

"I am proud of the team for finally getting their attitude and energy in the right spot after a very sluggish start. I thought that we were not prepared for Florida's intensity. I thought Florida was tremendously hard working in the first half. We had spoken with the team about that in our preparations, and they did exactly what I thought they would. They played very hard, they cut hard, they read screens well, and we just did not match their intensity. That is why we were down at halftime, and we were fortunate to have only been down four. That last 20 minutes we played hard, and much like we played the majority of the season. It is not the easiest thing to do to change your attitude in the middle of the game and I credit our players for being able to do that. We are really, really happy to win."

On how a different UK team showed up in the second half...

"It was pretty amazing. I told them at halftime that I was as disappointed in them as I had been all year, and I just have not said that many times. And I was absolutely disappointed. Florida took it to us, they were playing with more energy and enthusiasm, and as you can see, we just are not a very good team if we are not hustling and getting in passing lanes. I told them at halftime that there is no way two people can play hard in our defensive scheme and the other three just stand around. It doesn't work that way. We are taking some chances and doing some things where everyone has to be in tune, and you saw there in the second half that we were pressuring the ball a little bit better, so it was a tale of two different halves. It was really unbelievable."

On Lydia Watkins having all 19 of her points in the second half, and UK's bench depth ...

"Well, I was pleased that Lydia responded. I think she was giving the kind of effort that would get us beat, and I told that to her. I said she was playing like she was not interested in winning and she wanted to lose, and I haven't said that about her all year. Give her credit for bouncing back, because she was walking around in the first half like a zombie, so I don't know if she took her Geritol at halftime or what, but she came alive in the second half."

On when Snowden shoots further away, if he thinks she will miss...

"First of all she has a quick release, so you don't have much time to think about it. Those two she hit back to back there in the second half, I am sure no one on Florida's team thought that she was going to take those. But we see it all the time and that is her range, she is an incredible shooter. I am sure hoping and praying that they will go in."

On the fans donating and giving to a good cause, and what it is like to play with the WBCA Pink Zone game...

"It is tremendous. You hope that you will play well and perform well when there is so much attention on breast cancer awareness. Our Pink Zone was fantastic. We had a huge crowd, and it was a great night in the pink uniforms, and the Pink Zone was a huge success."

Kentucky Players

#4 Keyla Snowden, G

On her great shooting ability in tonight's game...

"I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates because they found me on some open looks. It gave me the opportunity to knock down some shots. When I get in my zone I just let shots go. The coaches keep telling me to catch and shoot when I am feeling good about it."

On getting in a shooting rhythm...

"I think most shooters would agree that once you hit your first couple of shots, you are able to find your zone. Then you are able to find the rhythm of the ball and the rhythm of your shots. I think that helped me to knock down shots by staying focused on shooting."

On hustling and playing extended minutes in tonight's game...

"I did not know I was going to end up playing as much as I did tonight. We worked hard on defense in practice and I think that helped us in the game. I know it did for me, because my extra work on defense helps me get my footwork and positioning right on offense."

On playing for a charitable cause to raise money and awareness for breast cancer with WBCA...

"Playing a game like this for a worthy cause means a lot to our team and to our program. It feels good to come out and be able to play for people who are in a tough situation. We want them to know that our team and so many people are supporting them, so that they feel great."

#34, Victoria Dunlap, F

On the depth of the team ...

"We have people that can play basketball, not just the starters, but people coming off the bench giving their energy and making plays. It's a good thing for our team to show that we're not just a one-person team or two-person team, but that everyone can play."

On the team's confidence ...

"Coach really got on to us at halftime about being enthusiastic and starting with defense, so we just had to come out in the second and half and get to where we knew how to play, which is defense. Start with defense and get stops, get the ball in transition and score buckets. From then on everybody was just getting hyped and taking it from there, getting confidence and everything."

On being down four at the half...

"I was definitely expecting us to come out in the second half and have our energy back up where it needed to be. I know we were definitely slow in the first half as a team. Some people were doing good things and some people weren't."

#12, Watkins, Lydia F

On what coach Mitchell said at halftime ...

"He basically just told us we needed to pick up the energy. One of the main things in the first half we lacked was energy, so we just tried to go out there and play better in the second half."

On how are you able to flip the switch in the game and come out with a better second half ...

"I just try to bring what my coach asks of me. If I bring the energy, I get hyped and then it rubs off on my teammates."

On what it felt like to be a part of such a big second half ...

"It felt great. It was definitely fun. In the first half we weren't that energized and not too into it. In the second half when we got into it, it rubbed off on everybody. It was a great way to win."

Florida Head Coach Amanda Butler

Opening statement...

"Obviously, it was a tale of two halves. We played very hard and we had a well-executed first half by our team. I was pleased with our effort and intensity and the results we produced. Somehow in the second half, that team left mentally and checked out. You have to give a lot of that credit to Kentucky. Obviously, their players stepped up and made a difference. (Keyla) Snowden, I don't know if that was a career night for her tonight, but we seemed to not be aware that she was a shooter, which is baffling. But, great night for her and we did not maintain our composure down the stretch."

On the loss to Kentucky...

"Their depth and their balance was something we were very aware of. Obviously, it was something we acknowledged as strengths. It is something that we currently don't possess. Our post players went 4-of-17 from the field. Obviously, we are one post man down right now and in the absence, you hope players will rise. We are currently not experiencing that.

"It was a two-point ballgame and then we allowed (Keyla) Snowden back-to-back threes, and that was obviously a very negative indicator of where our intensity level and focus was. Certainly, we didn't think the game was over with, but that is a big turning point."
