Kentucky Men's Tennis Set to Host ITA Kickoff Weekend

June 15, 2011

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- For the third straight season, the University of Kentucky men’s tennis team has been picked to host the International Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend as part of the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship on Jan. 27-30 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.

The Wildcats were chosen as one of 15 host sites for the event after finishing No. 8 in the final ITA team rankings released in late May. The No. 8 ranking is the best for the Wildcats since finishing eighth at the end of the 2002 season.

UK will be the No. 1 seed in the Lexington regional and will host No. 2-seeded Tulsa, No. 3-seeded East Tennessee State University and No. 4-seeded North Carolina State. The first round of the event will feature Kentucky against North Carolina State and Tulsa against ETSU with the winners from each match meeting in the second round for a chance to advance to the ITA National Indoor Team Championships Round of 16 on Feb. 10-13 in Charlottesville, Va.
Kentucky hosted the 2011 ITA Kickoff Weekend, posting victories over No. 42 Boise State and No. 22 Wake Forest to advance to National Indoors for the second consecutive season. UK also hosted the event in 2010, defeating Michigan and Wake Forest to advance to the National Indoors.

Including Kentucky, 15 of the top 16 teams in the 2011 ITA final team rankings received a host bid for the kickoff weekend with the only exception being Virginia, who automatically qualifies for the round of 16 due to hosting the national championship rounds. The Wildcats are one of four Southeastern Conference teams to be chosen to play host for the event, joining Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. Fellow SEC schools Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt will participate in the tournament.

Official dates and times for the event will be released at a later time. Stay tuned to for more information on the UK men’s tennis team.
