No. 10 Men's Tennis Falls Short to No. 6 Florida 4-3
April 4, 2010
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The 10th-ranked University of Kentucky men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback as No. 6 Florida rallied to win Sunday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
Kentucky (16-7, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) won the doubles point and maintained its lead with singles victories at Nos. 1 and 2. However, Florida (15-2, 7-0 SEC) chipped away, tying the match at No. 3 singles and claiming the win at No. 5 singles to remain undefeated in SEC action.
Florida's Nassim Slilam earned the decisive point at No. 5 singles, outlasting UK junior Alberto Gonzalez (Bradenton, Fla.) in a three-set marathon 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. The Gators pulled even at three wins apiece at No. 3 singles when Antoine Benneteau held off UK junior Brad Cox (Duluth, Ga.) 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Florida's other singles victories came at No. 6 singles where Sekou Bangoura won in straight sets over UK sophomore Graeme Dyce (Edinburgh, Scotland) 6-3, 6-1 and at No. 4 singles where Bob Van Overbeek defeated UK freshman Anthony Rossi (Martigues, France) 6-3, 6-4.
UK's singles wins came when No. 13 Eric Quigley (Pewee Valley, Ky.) upset No. 7 Aleandre Lacriox 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and No. 44 Alex Musialek (Dax, France) earned a 7-6, 6-3 victory against Florida's Joseph Burkhardt.
Kentucky took a 1-0 lead, grabbing the doubles point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. The UK duo of Gonzalez and senior Alex Lambropoulos (Lake Forest, Ill.) jumped out to a 3-1 lead and maintained its advantage in defeating Florida's Burkhardt and Bangoura 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. UK's Frenchmen tandem Musialek and Rossi were down 3-1 and 4-2 before rallying to defeat Van Overbeek and Daniel Cash of Florida 8-5 at No. 3 doubles. Florida salvaged a doubles match victory at No. 1 when Gator duo Benneteau and Lacroix rallied from a 7-6 deficit to nip UK's Quigley and Cox 9-8 after a 7-5 tiebreaker.
"We played one of our best matches of the season today in both singles and doubles," UK head coach Dennis Emery said. "Florida is one of the best teams in the nation and the best team we've played outdoors so far. We're disappointed with the loss, but we're looking to take some of this positive momentum into an important match against Illinois."
Kentucky battles No. 15 Illinois at home Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.
