Men's Tennis Falls to No. 9 Texas A&M
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Kentucky men's tennis team lost its Southeastern Conference opening match on Friday afternoon, as the Wildcats dropped a 4-0 decision to the No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
The Wildcats had a strong performance at No. 1 doubles, with juniors Beck Pennington and Kevin Lai leading 5-4 at the time of clinch over the No. 8 duo of Shane Vinsant and Harrison Adams of the Aggies.
In the doubles point, the Aggies got wins on courts two and three to seal the 1-0 lead. On court two, the first court to finish, No. 22 Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo defeated UK's duo of William Bushamuka and Jerry Lopez, 6-2. To clinch the doubles point, Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen and Jake Stefanik fell 6-3 to the Aggies' AJ Catanzairti and Arthur Rinderknech.
With the 1-0 lead, the Aggies extended it to 2-0 with a straight-sets win on court five, as No. 88 AJ Catanzairti defeated UK's Trey Yates, 6-1, 6-2. It would then move to a 3-0 lead for the Aggies as No. 83 Beck Pennington for Kentucky dropped just his fourth match this season to No. 66 Jeremy Efferding, 6-1, 6-0 on court one.
Texas A&M would clinch the win in its SEC opener on court six when Max Lukin, the Aggies anchor singles player, knocked off Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen 6-4, 6-0 to push Texas A&M past the Wildcats.
Kentucky is next in action on Sunday afternoon at LSU in Baton Rouge, La., where UK will look to pick up its first SEC win of the season. The Wildcats are now 6-7 on the season overall and 0-1 in league play.
