No. 14 Kentucky Defeats Eastern Kentucky, Ends Impressive Day of Tennis

Feb. 6, 2010

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Getting a great performance in singles, the University of Kentucky men’s tennis team (6-1) extended its winning streak to four after posting a 5-1 victory over in-state rival Eastern Kentucky (2-3) at the Hilary J. Boone Indoor Tennis Complex Saturday night.

Both teams agreed to play the singles portion of the match first after playing separate dual meets earlier in the day. Kentucky posted one of the biggest wins in recent school history defeating second-ranked Virginia 4-3. With the win, UK snapped the Cavaliers’ 63-match regular-season win streak. UVA played Eastern Kentucky directly following their match with UK, defeating the Colonels 6-0.

Sophomores Eric Quigley and Alex Musialek were the big winners Saturday, both winning their two singles matches and each posting a win in doubles against Virginia. Quigley posted his second straight sets victory of the day when he defeated EKU sophomore Niklas Schroeder 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. The native of Pewee Valley, Ky., has now won four straight singles matches and been instrumental in UK winning four consecutive doubles points.

Musialek posted the biggest singles win of UK’s young season earlier Saturday, defeating UVA’s Michael Shabaz, the third ranked player in the nation. The Frenchman followed up that performance with a convincing win over EKU sophomore Carlos Valdenebro 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles in the evening match.

Junior Brad Cox and senior Alex Lambropoulos sealed the win over the Colonels by scoring points at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions, respectfully. Cox, a native of Duluth, Ga., defeated EKU sophomore Philip Janz 6-3, 6-3, while Lambropoulos (Lake Forest, Ill.) posted the match-clinching point with a win over Carles Pons Excanilla, 7-5, 6-1.

Kentucky returns to action Friday when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., to play in the ITA National Indoor Championships. The Wildcats will play in the round of 16 against the fourth-seeded Bruins of UCLA at 3 p.m. ET. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Virginia. Live results will be available online at ukathletics.com.
