HONOLULU, Hawaii - Kentucky men's tennis players turned their racquets into brooms during singles action against Hawaii Thursday, sweeping all six matches contested at the UH Tennis Center in Honolulu.
The No. 36 Wildcats rolled, dropping just one lone set in their dominance of the host No. 55 Warriors. UK also took two out of three doubles matches on the day. The teams continue exhibition play Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
In a battle of seniors, No.4 Bruno Agostinelli defeated Hawaii's Jeff Fitch 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Eric Quigley, ranked 37th nationally, took out fellow first-year UH player Chad Rubin 6-3, 6-3. UK sophomore Brad Cox posted two 6-2 sets in his victory over Warrior junior Spence Mendoza.
Sophomore Alberto Gonzalez also won in straight sets over UH's Leo Rosenberg 6-4, 7-5. Meanwhile, newcomer Graeme Dyce, blanked his opponent Craig Faulk 6-0 in the first set before clinching his match 6-2 in the second. Kentucky freshman Alex Musialek ran away from Warrior Sascha Heinemann winning 6-1 in the first. Heinemann edged the Wildcat 7-6 in the third before Musialek rebounded 6-2 in the deciding set.
In doubles action, UK duo Dyce and Quigley defeated Rosenberg and Heinemann 8-4. Wildcat freshman Patrick Bandy and junior Alex Lambropoulos paired up to knock off Fitch and Rubin by a final count of 8-6. The Warriors notched their only victory of the day as Faulk and Mendoza edged sophomore Will Beck and senior Shane Collins, 8-6.
"I thought it was a good first day of competition for us," UK head coach Dennis Emery said. "I am pleased with the play of Gonzalez and Musialek today and how they competed. Dyce saw his first action in singles and doubles for us today. It's always good to get some matches in like this before the regular season. We'll be counting on him to help us in both singles and doubles this year."
The Wildcats open the regular-season on Sat. Jan. 24th in Lexington when they host a triple-header against UNC-Wilmington, Wright State and Murray State at Boone Tennis Center.
