Soccer Recieving Votes in Top-25 Poll
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- After posting a pair of shutout wins during a season-opening tournament last weekend, the Kentucky men’s soccer team is receiving votes in the latest Soccer Times top-25 poll and will face a total of four teams during the 2010 season currently ranked in the top 20.
Kentucky (2-0-0) received 14 votes in the Soccer Times poll, essentially ranking No. 33 among teams in the listing. Last week, UK received five votes in the preseason Soccer Times ranking.
In addition, the Wildcats will face off with a total of nine teams currently ranked or receiving votes, including four teams ranked in the top 16 (No. 3 Tulsa, No. 10 Louisville, No. 12 Connecticut, No. 16 Indiana). UK will also face SMU, UAB, South Carolina and Evansville, four teams receiving votes in the Soccer Times poll, with Evansville ranked No. 30 in the latest CollegeSoccerNews.com top-30 poll.
The Wildcats had a great weekend, posting a pair of 1-0 wins to secure the UK Invitational Tournament. UK freshman goalkeeper Tyler Beadle, making his first career start toiled a pair of clean sheets, winning his first career Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Offensively, Jordan Rose and freshman Tyler Riggs each netted game-winning goals, with Riggs’ goal coming in his first career collegiate game. Rose’s first career goal came on Sunday against IUPUI.
UK returns two standout performers from its 13-win team in 2009, including 2009 freshman All-America selection Matt Lodge and All-Conference USA defender Brad Walker. The duo was named to the preseason All-Conference USA team, with Walker shifting to a more natural position in the midfield as a junior in 2010. Walker, a 6-foot-4 native of Sydney, Australia, has won 9-of-10 contested header attempts this season.
Kentucky will welcome Loyola Marymount to the UK Soccer Complex for the Wildcat Invitational on Friday, with LMU receiving 24 votes in the Soccer Times poll. UK will face LMU on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET and will host Houston Baptist on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.
