Tyler Riggs Named One of NCAA's Top Freshmen

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky freshman forward Tyler Riggs, a native of Louisville, Ky., has been named to the listing of the top 100 freshmen to watch in collegiate soccer, it was announced by CollegeSoccerNews.com.

Riggs, a St. Xavier product, was named one of the 100 freshmen to watch during the 2010 NCAA men’s soccer season. A 5-foot-9, 145-pounder, Riggs emerged as a contender for playing time on a young but talented UK team this season after netting a goal in his first career appearance in a Kentucky uniform, in an exhibition win at Dayton. In a win over Marquette in the final exhibition game of the season, Riggs created a chance inside the box but had his shot saved in the sixth minute.

Kentucky opens its 2010 season on Friday, hosting the annual University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament at the UK Soccer Complex. IUPUI and UNC Asheville will open the tournament with a 5:00 p.m. ET game, before UK will kick off the regular-season with a 7:30 p.m. ET matchup with Eastern Illinois. On Sunday, UNC Asheville and EIU will face off at noon, before UK wraps up the UKIT with a 2:30 p.m. ET game with IUPUI.

A year after winning 13 games and posting five wins in conference play, the Kentucky men’s soccer team has received votes in the Soccer Times preseason top 25 poll, it was announced.

Last season, UK soared to as high as No. 13 in the national polls, heading into a game at No. 6 Indiana in the middle of the season. The Wildcats will face a total of five opponents ranked in the 2010 preseason top 25, including defending Conference USA champion Tulsa, checking in at No. 5. UK will face No. 10 Connecticut, No. 18 Indiana, No. 19 Louisville and No. 30 Evansville.
